Choosing the Correct Chandelier StyleHistorically, design styles have been a reaction to political, religious and social forces. Because nothing happens suddenly, dates given for design style movements can only be approximate. In many cases two styles overlap, one loses favor as another gaines in popularity.
There are many, many design styles to consider. Some of the broader categories are: Traditional - These types of chandeliers are multi-armed with curvilier lines and one or more types of embellishment. They are made of iron or wood and have many finishes such as brass, nickel, bronze, painted. These chandeliers can be of wrought iron or cast. Crystal chandeliers have long been a favorite. Depending on the quality of the crystal, light becomes refracted and the rainbow of colors further enhance the effect of the chandeliers light. Contemporary - A contemporary chandelier would be a style that is relevant to today's design challenges. Because we lead busy lives, ease of use, ease of cleaning and efficient lighting are some of the factors that would be involved in choosing a chandelier for a contemporary setting. The lines would be cleaner and the materials include fabric, glass, acrylic, etc. Finishes would would be oil rubbed bronze, nickel, brushed nickel, chrome, etc. Modern - Can also be classified as Atomic Age or fifties revival style. These chandeliers usually have rectilinier lines and are strongly influenced by geometry. The materials might be molded plastics and acrylics. Transitional - Transitional style is a marriage of traditional and contemporary furniture, finishes, materials and fabrics equating to a classic, timeless design. Furniture lines are simple yet sophisticated, featuring either straight lines or rounded profiles. Fabric is as diverse as graphic patterns on overstuffed sofas and textured chenilles on sleek wood frames. Transitional lighting would, in the same way be a marriage of traditional and contemporary. Retro -The quirky, avant-garde look of retro design is definitely making a comeback in modern day interior decorating. Retro interior design style is a throwback to the mid-twentieth century when streamlined, bright, and bold furnishings were introduced. Colours such as candy apple red, aqua, and sunshine yellow really channel the retro style. Accent with black & white, silver, and chrome – and you’ve got yourself a retro colour scheme!
Patterns like checkerboard, stripes, and polka-dots truly define the retro style. Shiny materials such as vinyl, laminate, and linoleum are also references to the past. Furnishings are normally constructed with plastic, plywood, or molded fiberglass/Plexiglas.
