Tucked into the northern Vermont hills, just down the road from the picturesque ski village of Stowe, House of Troy has been producing classic lighting since the mid 1940s. Though off the beaten path and far from the spotlights of the big cities, the House of Troy reputation burns brightly. For nearly sixty years, the company has been offering lighting known for its craftsmanship and quality.
The company was founded across the Vermont border in Montreal in 1947 by Everett Bailey. In its first years, the company was a small custom lamp shop selling to gift and department stores in and around the Canadian city. The founder's son, Norm Bailey, took over the business in 1960, moved the business to North Troy, Vermont and renamed the company "House of Troy." It was the younger Bailey who designed the tooling to make the "best picture lights available" and introduced them to stores throughout the Northeast.
House of Troy began expanding its increasingly popular picture lighting when Kent and Natalie Mitchell purchased the business in 1982. The Mitchells added to the small staff of six, introduced a line of quality piano lamps, and took the House of Troy line to the International Lighting Show in Dallas. As the company expanded, it outgrew the North Troy location. A former "cow barn turned dance hall and roller-skating rink" in nearby Hyde Park, Vermont became the new location for a portion of the manufacturing operations. Eventually, all operations were moved from North Troy to Hyde Park; the name - known by this time throughout North America - remained the same.
House of Troy designs and crafts all of its products to assure lasting performance. Although many of its products continue to be designed and manufactured in Hyde Park, Vermont, the company also sources parts and products worldwide in order to provide the best possible value to its customers.
Finishes
Our Classic and Slim-Line™ picture lights are offered in the most popular finishes. If you would like a finish that is not stocked, call our customer service department for lead time and cost.
The antique and weathered brass finishes are applied then rubbed by hand to achieve the proper effect. For this reason there are slight surface variations which are expected and desirable.
Metallic Finishes:
We use the highest quality solid brass from which we hand cut our shades. Our
#61 Polished Brass finish is then polished and buffed giving it a reflective quality. A coat of clear lacquer is then applied to protect and seal the finish for a lifetime of use.
#51 Satin Brass is a matte, burnished brass, finished in a flat protective lacquer. For our
#56 Statuary Bronze, we use a translucent lacquer which gives the shade a tawny metallic finish.
Hand Rubbed Patinas:
Our finish patinas are achieved by coloring solid brass with an application of acid oxide.
#71 Antique Brass is an oxidized finish, darkened, then partially rubbed away, leaving dark highlights throughout.
#91 Oil Rubbed Bronze is our darkest oxidized finish, its rich metallic tones are an industry standard. For our
#76 Weathered Brass, we prepare our brass leaving slight surface variations and lightly dip to create a natural, aged appearance. All of our oxidized finishes are protected with a finish coat of matte lacquer.
Smooth Painted Finishes:
Our picture lights are of museum quality and we have developed painted finishes that most suit the frames they will highlight. All of our painted finishes are opaque.
#1 Gold, our most popular picture light finish, has the look of pale gold leaf.
#5 Bronze, is a rich, milk chocolate hue.
#31 Pewter is a matte gray, gun metal finish.
#81 Mahogany Bronze is a deep shade of brown, our darkest bronze painted finish.
Textured Painted Finishes:
To achieve our textured finishes, we use a two step application. First a base coat of textured lacquer is applied, giving an uneven, distressed appearance. We finish with a color coat, to create our
#2 Wrinkled Gold, or our
#42 Wrinkled Platinum. The result is an aged, old world look, highlighted in gold or silver.
Powder Coated Finishes:
#7 Black and
#9 White are a matte powder-coated finish. The powder coating will ensure a lifetime of use, free from scratching and marring.
Plated Finishes:
Our two plated finishes give our classic shades a more contemporary feel. As well as protecting them from surface marring.
#62 Chrome has a highly polished, mirror-like appearance, while our
#52 Satin Nickel is burnished after plating for a softer, matte finish.
